Clover
In this stunning novel, Dori Sanders tells a story of black-white relationships like no other ever written, as seen through the eyes of a black, ten-year-old girl who is bound to become one of the most appealing and memorable characters in literature. Set in rural South Carolina, Clover's life changes forever when her father dies, hours after his marriage to his college sweetheart and she must build a new life with her stepmother who is white. This is a warm and engaging story of love and of family as well as the divide of color and race and the question - what creates family?

This debut novel is a startling story, which has as its subtext a description of the unconscious creation of whiteness in this country. A Boston Globe review described Caucasia as "a well-crafted coming-of-age story that escapes the confines of race, all the while digging to its complex core."
Growing up biracial in 1970s Boston, Birdie is the daughter of a black father and a white mother, the lighter-skinned of two sisters, who are forced apart when their mother goes underground after a revolutionary scheme misfires. She takes Birdie as cover and hits the road, severing all ties with the past. They finally settle down in a small New Hampshire town where Birdie endures the thoughtless racism of schoolmates until her longing for her sister and father, and for acknowledgment of her mixed blood, induces her to hit the road again, this time as a runaway. She sets out to find her sister and reconnect with that part of her that has been lost for so long and ultimately to a search for her own true identity. Throughout the novel, the author superbly illustrates the emotional toll of politics and race.

Speaking of Sex: the Denial of Gender Inequality
The author documents the continuing systematic disadvantages women face in U.S. society across a wide range of legal, social, and public policy settings. The accumulation of data and her cogent analyses create an excellent guide to sexism in our time. The book is unlike general-interest books on any side of this debate in that it draws on a vast amount of real scholarship and ranges widely over the available literature in out of academia. While Rhode is not an exciting writer, she does combine authoritative insights and elegant prose to discuss America's 'no problem' problem. Readers will no longer have the mistaken assumption that gender inequality is a problem which has been solved.
